The Freemasons Hospital began its life as a 60-bed hospital in 1937 and has since grown to 250 beds. It is a private, not-for-profit hospital with two campuses in the heart of Melbourne.

The maternity unit is one of Victoria's most sought after, and in the ten years since it began, has developed a niche, with a la carte food and hotel-like surrounds. However, it's now the Freemasons leaders in midwifery care commitment that draws women from all over Victoria, and from interstate and overseas, to the 38-bed unit. Over 2,200 deliveries are performed each year.

Cancer treatment is another major focus of the Freemasons, and it has one of Victoria's most comprehensive cancer services.

Facilities include cancer surgery (especially breast, urology and gynaecology) a medical oncology unit; radiotherapy and chemotherapy including a Day Oncology Unit, which can treat over 40 patients per day. And Victoria's only private Low Dose Brachy Therapy facility which provides a possible alternative treatment for men with prostate cancer.

The Freemasons also offers general surgery, a private emergency department, and a 12-bed intensive care unit. Out-patient facilities include the Women's Health Clinic, Men's Health Clinic and Specialist Breast Clinic.

In the Breast Clinic, women can have a mammogram and, if necessary, receive a same-day diagnosis from the on-staff specialist.

The Freemasons' mission is to always provide 'the caring alternative' in a safe and well-managed environment. Open communication between doctors, staff and patients is strongly encouraged to give patients involvement in their care and treatment.
